Course overview
Development work succeeds when a community has a genuine stake in it, and this course shows you how to build that ownership from the start. You will study how to understand a community's needs and assets, mobilise residents and local leaders, and design projects communities help shape rather than have imposed on them.
Topics include participatory needs assessment tools, community engagement and facilitation techniques, and planning interventions that are realistic to sustain once outside support ends. It is aimed at NGO field staff, local government officers, church and community leaders, and anyone coordinating development work at the grassroots level.
What will i learn?
- Conduct a participatory needs and asset assessment in a community
- Apply techniques for mobilising and engaging community members and leaders
- Design a community development intervention with a realistic sustainability plan
- Facilitate a community meeting or focus group effectively
- Identify common pitfalls that cause community projects to fail
